The Sugar Bowl - Scottsdale, AZ
Someone was giving me directions and said you need to take a right at the Sugar Bowl. I thought it was a joke. I only knew Sugar Bowl to mean NCCA football game in New Orleans. Much to my surprise it is an old fashion ice parlor and a well known Scottsdale, AZ landmark located in Old Town.Bill Keane, whose legendary comic strip, The Family Circus, made the Sugar Bowl famous. You can see he is well honored in both the menu and his art on the walls of the Sugar Bowl. I was told he does still frequent the Sugar Bowl for lunch and to give readings.
Thursday evening, the night of the big Scottsdale Artwalk I decided to have dinner at the Sugar Bowl and try this famous landmark's ice cream. And temp my inner child with a delightful treat.
The tuna salad was mixed with sweet relish laid thick on toasted whole-wheat beard came with chips and pickle. Though I did ask for a slice of Swiss cheese it was forgotten much to the surprise of the counter person, who apologized so sweetly for the cook's forgetfulness. I didn't make a big deal out of it because it tasted so good! And washed down nicely with delicious limeade soda.
There were several selections of ice cream I choose the 23 Skiddoo. Presented in a tall glass with dreamy coffee syrup, Old Dutch chocolate ice cream sliced almonds, chocolate syrup, and Turkish coffee ice cream. All spruced up with tempting whip and a red cherry. This will certainly made my inner child very happy! I ate almost every bite but didn't want to push it. Walking around in the 110-degree heat of the AZ desert with a stomach-full of dessert isn't desirable.Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream creates special order ice cream for the Sugar Bowl. To please your inner child try the old fashion tenderness and taste of the Sugar Bowl.

"Hi Tery,
Well, I see it didn't take you long to head over to the Sugar Bowl (after our discussion)! Yum!!

A few years back when I lived near downtown Scottsdale, I stumbled into the Sugar Bowl by chance. It was a blistering hot day, and I was lost in my own city while exploring on foot. I felt like Alice falling through the looking glass when I entered. The bright pink retro interior (not to mention the air conditioning) quickly cleansed my overheated brain. My suspiciously perky and overaccommodating waitress (Stepford wife?) brought me the first strawberry malt I've had since puberty. Complete with whipped cream, cherry, and presented in a gleaming aluminum what-cha-ma-call-it container. It was a heavenly concoction. While loudly slupring the final few drops I made a silent pact to return any day when the temperatures outside reached 100 degrees. That was before I noticed all the framed "Family Circus" cartoons on the wall, courtesy of frequent patron Bil Keane. As a non-parent with an active imagination that leans towards the dark side, the aw-shucks hijinks of the "Family Circus" crew have always annoyed me. The sugar overdose from the malt seemed tame in comparision to the toons proudly displayed in every direction. My enthusiasm for the place waned a bit, and my threshold for future mandatory malts rose to 115 degrees :)
I strongly recommend this haunt. But if you're not a "Family Circus" fan, bring your own read (the Doom Patrol?).

I personally do not like the Sugar Bowl - I always seem to get sick when I eat there. The restuarant is not maintained well at all and the seats are very dirty even though they are plastic and can be easily washed.
I highly recommend Mary Coyle's on 7th Avenue, the Sundae's are much better and the ice cream is home made onsite and tastes EXCELLENT!!! The restaurant is very clean and well maintained.
My favorite sundae is "The Suicide" Or is it murder? Vanilla ice cream covered with caramel & Marshmallow toppings, chocolate chip ice cream covered with hot fudge, & penuche nut ice cream covered with caramel, garnished with cashews, almonds, & pecans. topped with whipped cream & a cherry. I asked them to add a homemade brownie, which was to die for, on the bottom just to add a few more calorie counts!!
Visit the website and they even serve lots of good sandwiches etc.

FOOD FIGHT!!
You gotta love it.Daily Eats just took got hit with a big ice cream pie.
We'll check out your suggestion and let the world know how we rate Mary Coyles.
I vote for Razzleberries! It was this ice cream shop in Katonah, NY that we'd go to when I was little!
Very late to be commenting on your post, but I just tried Sugar Bowl for the first time. It was pretty good, but I think Mary Coyle's has the upper hand. Sugar Bowl's 23 Skidoo does sound like a great sundae though so I'll have to try it some time.
