Cowboy Eats
What a whirl wind tour of Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Williams, AZ and Hoover Dam, I had with Manos, who incidentally is wonderful to travel with!We had a GREAT time! He put a big smile on my face, by making sure I was hooked-up with wireless access! He turned my old Sony Vaio notebook into a true mobile computing device and off into the desert we drove in a gas guzzling SVU to the Canyon. I actually worked while he drove, happy to be banging away on my keyword and watching the scenary roll by.Blogging food would have been so much easier if the Treo 650 actually worked. I was so disappointed by Cingular and their customer service. I spent $500 on the device you think there would be support. FYI there is no customer support for Treo 650 on the weekends. Gosh, I didn't know the net stops on the weekends. After my trip I returned the Treo and am now looking for something better that can actually deliver on mobile blogging, podcasting, and vcasting. Daily Eats wants to take food blogging to a whole new level of enjoyment and entertainment.
On to Cowboy Food! Did I mentioned Manos and I had a great time in Williams, AZ, a truly fascinating place where real cowboys in Levi jeans sporting cowboy hats and shite-kickin boots do exist?
Our first stop on the food trail, after a stunning sunset view of the Grand Canyon, was Pancho McGillicuddys Mexican Cantina. Known as Williams's oldest Mexican restaurant claiming to have the largest selection of Tequila's and Microbrews. The steak and peppers with traditional Spanish rice and refried beans was impressive. I found the fish taco to be just ok. There was an old cowboy singing cowboy songs in the outdoor courtyard where we dined. It put us in the mood for explorating the old Southwest. The townie conversations we overheard were extremely entertaining, such as the boisterous super-manhood or rather stupid manhood accounts of taming wild fillies (women).
Next morning up at the crack of dawn we were excited about our pending trek down the canyon walls, we headed out for a great Cowboy breakfast at Old Smoky's Restaurant. The buckwheat pancakes and strawberry topping and a side of sausages were delicious and the right kind of robust breakfast for 3 hour Grand Canyon hike. Carbs and salty foods rule when hiking, so forget the diet if you want to survive the hike.
Down into the Canyon we descended the view breath taking, the weather perfect, and our calves painful. We drank at least 16 ounces of water per hour while hiking the canyon. WATER is a must! Along the way we consumed salty food, Pringles Salt and Vinegar chips, cheese popcorn, beef jerky and licorice. It was a feast by Canyon standards. As we crawled back up the steep boundaries the only thing I could think of is there's a Gatorade cocktail waiting for me in the SUV!
After our strenuous hike we needed relaxation in the hotel hot tub, muscle pain seemed to melt away and real hunger was finally setting in. To satisfy our appetite we headed to Rod's Steak House, world famous on Route 66 since 1946. We had the sugar coated steak served with baked potato, which was very tender. I would have never thought to grill a steak coated with sugar would add to the favor and juices of the steak! Oh my! It was fab!
So, cowboys you can take your favorite cowgirl for a fancy steak dinner with all the trimmings and including tip for under $60 for two. Now, that something to say yea ha over!
Next day we bid good bye to Williams and concluded our eating tour of Route 66 at the Route 66 Diner. Manos really got into the cowboy culture and bought a good old fashion Stetson. Should I dare say he looks just like the Marlboro Man posing in front of the famous Route 66 Diner? We had a very healthy breakfast starting off with peaches locally canned and finishing with Spanish omelet with a very nice tomato and garlic salsa. I want that recipe! Our farewell took us up to the top of Williams Mountain where no sports car should ever roam, thank goodness we had the SUV. The purity of nature was felt under our feet and in our hearts.
Yum yum! there is no other way to describe Cowboy Eats in Williams, AZ. This is not a town to just pass by on the way to the Canyon, this is a great town to fall in love with and get in touch with your inner cowboy or girl.

Thank you Tery for your kind words. The whole trip was absolutely amazing, especially because of the excellent company.
BTW On the first picture, No, I was NOT looking at the bill :) It was actually a copy of a copy of a copy of the tequila list…. Something like 36 different brands of tequila. And after I picked one, I can honestly say that it was good enough for fueling the space shuttle!
Oh, we are so bummed that we missed you and Manos while you were at the canyon. You both must come back soon and stay at the Buchheit Bed-n-Breakfast! While I'm not sure my cooking will match that of Cowboy Eats -- I guarantee that I can serve up a better view!

I think I turned Manos into a Canyon Hiking Lover. You should see his photos:
