What’s Growing in Gilbert?

What’s Growing in Gilbert?

Twice weekly trips to theGilbert’s Farmer’s Market make my life in transition to Gilbert AZ a real pleasure. I love farmer’s markets, I’ve been to farm many different farmer’s market’s in the US, UK and Europe. I love the healthy goodness that come direct from farm to my fork to my body! Mostly I enjoy the honest pride expressed by the farmers that grow healthy organic and natural products and enjoy meeting the people they provide for. This is no different for local growers and locally made providers that participate in the Gilbert’s Farmer’s Market. They are awesome! What like best is about attending the Gilbert’s Farmer’s Market is the feeling of community. I get a greater sense of belonging to the community rather than feeling as if I’m lost in the center of the desert. I go on both Wednesday’s to Power Ranch and Saturday’s to downtown Gilbert.

I bought from:

  • Elizabeth’s Moments of Joy – OMG her Whoopie Pies are delicious! I especially love  the chocolate on chocolate! I love the ’50′s retro packaging!
  • ISS Magic Mixes – Certified gluten free oatmeal – I got the blueberry vanilla  and almond mix! making my breakfast so much more delightful!
  • The Farm at Agritopia – I was immediately attracted to their display of product. I juiced their red cabbage, cilantro, lemons, kale, spinach, beets, yes I love their beets I love it all!
  • Doctor Hummus - Every time I see Doctor Hummus I get samples that flow continuously and every time we walk away with several different varieties including Roasted Garlic, Olive Tapenade, Sun-Dried Tomato Pesto, Vegan Spinach & Onion Dip, Guacamole.
  • Seize the Fork – Turned me onto Mega PowderBlend which adds extra zip to my new found juicing art – They’re VEGAN! btw I love their rich photo images on their Facebook page.
  • Rhiba Farms – Wheatgrass! Now talk about straight from the farm – love the sweet taste of this wheatgrass. I just may adopt a chicken – you should too! these chicks are free range pasture feed! that’s what I call fresh!
  • DeCio Pasta – handmade gluten-free pasta – I had seconds on their pasta – though sadly they had fire and won’t be producing for awhile.
  • Uprooted Kitchen – I love this food truck! OMG their chocolate zucchini is to die for – I just may if I don’t get another piece! my favorite vegetarian food truck!

Gilbert AZ has a small community with over 212,000 people, there are 1793 farms in Maricopa County that’s 27% down since 1997. I aim to support our local growers and locally made in Gilbert and AZ. How about you?

Saturday I’ll be shopping with my brother, Tom. I’ll say hello!

What to do with Organic Peaches?

What to do with Organic Peaches?

It’s organic peach season in Boulder! I had no idea the organic peaches in Boulder would totally blow my taste buds. Since discovering and uncovering these specimen’ juicy sweet nectar I’ve been on a peach cooking frenzy.

Last night I made organic mango and peach chutney to pour over grilled chicken, sweet onions, and yellow peppers. I’ve never made chutney before I didn’t follow a recipe but this is what I did:

  • Removed the skin from 2 peaches and a half of mango.  Diced into edible squares.
  • Added one clove of garlic
  • 2 tablespoons of fresh cilantro
  • 1 tablespoon of safflower oil

I put the safflower oil into a small sauce pan and heated. Added all the ingredients from above brought to a slow boil and cooking it partly down.

Grilled Chicken with Mango Peach ChuntneyAdded as shown to grilled chicken, onions, peppers. It was delicious!

Next up Peach Pancakes. I got up early this morning to get the best of the best from the Boulder Farmers Market. The sun beat me this morning so I’ll have to try for 8 rather than 9 so that I can stay longer. I got my peaches!!

Ingredients for Peach Pancakes I hurried home so that I could make buckwheat peach pancakes.

I use Organic Arrowhead Mills Buckwheat Pancake mix and follow the instructions with some changes:

Instead of milk I use Rice Dream

Instead of honey I use Madhava Pure Organic Agave Nectar

All the other ingredients remain the same except I’m only making pancakes for one.

Boulder Organic Peaches

Sweet organic sliced peaches for the pancakes! So delicious!

adding the peaches to pancakes

I learned a lesson peaches don’t add well to grilling pancakes. The remaining peach slices I used to garnish the top of the pancake.

Next time I make peach pancakes I’ll be sure to try dicing the peaches and adding to the batter.

Boulder Organic Peach Pancakes

Despite lessons learned, my peach pancakes were delicious. Get to the Boulder Farmer’s Market for your peaches! Eat them as is,or cook, bake,  ice, or can them but try the peaches!

Zen and Art of Delivery

First – thank you Coopertown for feeding me this morning. I no sooner placed my order and poof the delivery arrived. Sure I could have gotten dressed walked down to the diner but I’ve been working all night and continue work this morning. This was an easy choice. The chocolate chip pancakes had the right degree of chocolate chips to make the pancakes gooey and sweet. They hit the spot! Though I would have preferred the bacon to be a little crispier, the fresh squeezed OJ made up for it all.

To kick off the best experience to the delivery the person who took my order was so polite and friendly.

Second – a discovery I made last night. Yeah I’m sure it’s been around; is delivery.com. I have a gazillion menus slipped under my door every day none come with customer ratings it’s hard to tell what’s good to take a chance on. Peter Cooper Village isn’t as secure as it may seem when deliver people can walk the floors slipping menus under your door.

I tried delivery.com last night. I selected Quantum Leap. The order came about 45 minutes later, expected for a Saturday night around 8pm. I was working last night and needed some great delicious organic eats for dinner. Dos Enchiladas was excellent. Though I was only able to eat one, the other I saved for lunch. Guacamole and tortilla chips were refreshing. The best part was the fresh green salad with carrot ginger dressing. And fresh squeezed carrot and beet juice hit the spot for an extra dose of energy I needed.

A few weeks back Maria Radloff and I had breakfast at Quantum Leap it was excellent, as is the take out.

Daily Eats Lunchbox: Organique

Organique Beef-CheeseburgerNew York, New York - I’ve been to Organique four times since it opened earlier this year. Two out of the four times I ordered the organic burger with organic air baked fries. It is a good burger served on big whole wheat bun. The organic beef is raised in South Dakota by the Dakota Beef Company which is USDA Organic certified.

I had my Organic beef burger, organic cheese (c.) served with lettuce, tomato, pickles organic mayonnaise and ketchup. Biting into the Organique burger is a challenge. The first attempted resulted in the insides coming out the other side. The burger is delicious but very messy. For trial two, I asked that my burger be cut in half making it a little easier to tackle and eat. The air baked fries are refreshing and tasty not oily or heavy.

True a little pricey, but I had no indigestion, nor swelling fingers from excess salt and preservatives that are found in traditional burgers, and found my energy level to be at a high instead of slumping an hour after eating. I would prefer spending a little more for something tasty and healthy. If you’re looking for a healthy place for quick lunch Organique is the place.

Breakfast After Cinco de Mayo

Spring has finally sprung because my allergies are in full bloom today. Ordinarily I would podcast, but you would not be able to understand me with my nose so stuffed up.

I had some ingredients left over from last night’s Cinco de Mayo dinner:
Organic guacamole
Organic cilantro
Newman’s Medium Chunky Salsa
Tery’s tantalizing black beans
Low fat sour cream
Mission Carb Balance Tortillas
Horizon Organic Monterey Jack Cheese
Added 2 Mainland Organic Valley Large Brown Eggs.

And then I whipped up breakfast.
I fried the eggs in teaspoon of olive oil.
Boiled the black beans down to a more creamery consistency and added a half of teaspoon of Jack Cheese and cilantro.

Built the foundation with tortilla, next the 2 fried eggs dash of sea salt and pepper, thin layer of salsa, black beans, then another layer of salsa topped with guacamole and ½ of teaspoon of sour cream.

Organic Guacamole recipe: 1 Organic Haas avocado properly mashed, organic garlic finely diced, finely chopped cilantro, table spoon of fresh organic lime juice, sea salt to taste.
